Interior Finish Choices

Pool and spa finishes vary in TYPE and COLOR and TEXTURE.  As you can see from our large variety of completed swimming pool projects, the interior finish selection plays a valuable role in the final visual effect.

Plaster

The standard pool finish throughout the pool industry is a PLASTER finish. That is typically included in the base price for a pool installation.  However, plaster finishes may need to be reinstalled after a few years since plaster is a relatively soft surface.  Plaster can also be susceptible to scratches, mottling and other visual imperfections.

Pebble Finishes and Quartz Finishes

Typically for additional cost, other pool finishes, in lieu of a plaster finish may be selected.  They include various pebble-aggregate finishes and quartz stone finishes. Generally, these finishes provide a more durable finish with better longevity.  And, thanks to the large color selections that are available, the choice of pebble/aggregate/quartz can play an important role in the overall aesthetic and appearance of the pool environment.

Important Note

Note that many factors will dictate the appearance of the water. This includes the time of day, time of year, weather conditions, application of the surface material, etc.).  Color variations and imperfections are to be expected.

The depth of the water also varies on almost every pool (from shallow steps to the deep end of the pool) and the depth of the water will affect the appearance of the pool water (due to ‘refraction’ of light).

Effect of Depth of Water on Appearance

The finish that is applied to the interior of the pool or spa can have a significant effect on the overall color and appearance of the pool water. Essentially, the mix of colors in the finish will help dictate the color/shade/hue of the water along with the depth of the water.

Standard Plaster Pool Finish

This is a sample image of how a standard pool interior finish in plaster/’marbelite’ might look. Plaster finish is generally a softer finish and subject to more scratching and mottling. Most plaster finishes will need to be re-installed after a number of years. Quartz and pebble finishes however typically have a longer lifespan and are generally more durable.
